Common deck problems

Why most deck jobs fail

If your deck looked great for six months and bad by the next summer, here is what usually happened.

  • Wrong product

Big-box stain is sold to homeowners and contractors who do not know the difference. It sits on the surface and fails fast. Professional-grade product seeps in and lasts.

  • Sprayed, not brushed

Spraying is fast. It also lays the product on top of the wood instead of working it in. The first time the deck gets wet or hot, the bond gives up.

  • Skipped the prep

If the boards are not properly cleaned and sanded, the new stain bonds to old stain or dirt. Within a year it is peeling along with what was underneath.

  • Wrong moisture

Wet wood will not take stain. Wood that is too dry will pull moisture from the stain. We test the moisture in 15 to 20 spots so the product can actually do its job.

Expert Stain and Seal product

The product

Why we use Expert Stain and Seal

We use Expert Stain and Seal on every deck. It is a true oil-based product that seeps into the wood instead of sitting on top of it. The result is a finish that ages gracefully over years instead of chipping and peeling within months.

When the color is ready to be refreshed, we come back and restain. No stripping, no scraping, no surprise damage. That is the difference between a deck you maintain and a deck you keep redoing.

Safe for pets and plants. OSHA-graded for low VOCs. Manufacturer-backed for color retention.

Frequently asked

Deck staining questions

How long does the stain last?
Most decks hold their color for three to five years, depending on how much sun the deck gets. South-facing decks fade faster than shaded ones.
Do I need to be home?
No. Deck staining is exterior work, so we can come and go as needed. We just need access to a water source and an outlet.
Do you clean and sand it?
Yes. Full prep is part of every deck job. Cleaning with professional-grade chemicals, sanding the boards smooth, repairing what needs to be repaired. Skipping prep is what makes most deck jobs fail.
Do you brush or spray?
We brush every deck by hand. Brushing breaks the surface tension of the wood and works the stain into the grain, which is what makes the finish last. We do spray lattice and fences, but we back-brush even those.
Do you do touch-ups?
Yes. We do a walkthrough with you when the deck is dry, mark anything you want touched up, and come back within a week to handle it.
Is this safe for my pets and plants?
Yes. The products are OSHA-graded, low-VOC, and safe around pets and vegetation. We just ask that pets stay off the deck until the stain is fully dry.
Can you stain a brand-new deck?
Yes, often within a week of construction, as long as the moisture level in the wood is right. We test moisture in 15 to 20 spots before we stain.
What if it rains?
We watch the forecast and schedule the staining day for dry weather. If a surprise shower hits, we let you know and reschedule the affected section.
